Martin James, an 18-year-old goalkeeper developed at Paris Saint-Germain, reached the end of his youth contract this summer and faced a decision regarding a professional deal. Despite an offer from PSG, the academy graduate chose to leave and signed with Cologne, who finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season.
The goalkeeper marked his departure from his formative club with a message on social media.
James: “I gave you everything, and in return, you gave me an experience that was simply unforgettable.”
“You welcomed me, you helped me grow, you helped me improve… You put me through very difficult times, but also moments of pure happiness. I gave you everything, and in return, you gave me an experience that was simply unforgettable. I am writing to you today with great emotion and a feeling that is hard to describe. Throughout my development, I experienced it all: moments of doubt, victories, injuries, defeats… and I thank you for all of it.”
James: “Thank you to everyone for the work done since day one.”
“I also want to thank everyone working behind the scenes—without whom the club could not exist—as well as those who personally supported me throughout my time at Paris Saint-Germain. A special thought goes to the entire goalkeeping department, players and coaches alike. Thank you to everyone for the work done since day one.
A new life and new projects now await me elsewhere. Paris, I leave you today as a different man and player than when I arrived. See you soon on the pitch. ❤️💙”
It is a very special moment, full of emotion but undoubtedly a well-considered decision. Like any player in an academy, James likely dreamed of making his mark at his club. But it is a massive step up, especially when dealing with a two-time European champion. The challenge is even greater for a goalkeeper, a position where sharing playing time is notoriously difficult.
The young keeper is therefore embarking on a new adventure, hoping to secure professional playing time sooner. The Bundesliga is known for putting its faith in young players, making this a move that makes perfect sense—even though there are no guarantees. Then again, guarantees don’t exist in football anyway; a career can move fast and take unexpected turns.
We can only wish James a great experience in Cologne and hope he develops well and finds fulfillment in his career—even if it is a shame he didn’t stay at PSG and gain experience through loan spells instead.
