The Professional Football League’s Disciplinary Committee met this evening to determine the sanctions resulting from recent matches in French professional football. The agenda included the case of Nuno Mendes, the 23-year-old Paris Saint-Germain left-back who received a straight red card on Sunday during the Trophée des Champions match lost to Lens.He was therefore due for an automatic one-match suspension, but the LFP decided to add two more games.
“Three-match suspension
Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain)”
This is a real blow for PSG, as they lose a key player for the start of the season against Rennes, Lille, and Monaco—big matches that were also meant to help Nuno Mendes build up his match fitness. He will return for the start of the Champions League (Wednesday, September 9) without having played a single game. The decision also seems harsh, given that the referee noted in his report that the blow was struck off the ball, even though play was actually ongoing. It comes at a high cost.
