It is the surprise of the evening, and it has already been confirmed: the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes—scheduled for Matchday 1 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season this weekend—is changing venues. The pitch at the Parc des Princes is unplayable; the Professional Football League (LFP) officially announced on Wednesday evening that the game will instead take place at Roazhon Park. The return fixture will be held at the Parc.
“After being informed by Paris Saint-Germain on August 17 about the condition of the Parc des Princes pitch, the LFP arranged for a specialized consultancy and a league delegate to conduct a thorough inspection of the playing surface on the morning of August 19. The inspection revealed that the pitch’s current state did not guarantee player safety.
Meeting on August 19, the Competitions Commission decided that the match could not be held at the Parc des Princes. After noting that Paris Saint-Germain was unable to organize the game at an alternative venue, the Commission received assurances from Stade Rennais that they could host the Matchday 1 fixture this Sunday, August 23, at 8:45 PM.
Consequently, the Competitions Commission decided to reverse the fixture; the match will now take place at Roazhon Park this Sunday, August 23, at 8:45 PM.”
It is a double surprise. Reversing a fixture is rare enough as it is, but doing so for this specific reason is even more unexpected, given the renowned quality of the Parc des Princes pitch. PSG is usually a top performer in the league’s pitch rankings, but things have gotten off to a poor start this season. Perhaps an explanation will be provided later.
In any case, the match has been reversed, and the swift response from both the LFP and Rennes deserves praise. There is no postponed match—which always complicates the schedule—but rather a quickly arranged venue swap. An announcement regarding ticketing is expected soon for those who had already bought or sold a ticket for the match at the Parc des Princes.
