On Monday, Paris Saint-Germain faced Olympique de Marseille in the closing match of Ligue 1’s fifth round and lost 1-0. On the sidelines of the encounter, 23-year-old PSG defender Ilya Zabarnyi reacted to the defeat on PSG TV.

Zabarnyi: “We were just missing a goal.”
“It was a tough game to play, but we simply couldn’t convert our chances. That sometimes happens in football. We’ll stay strong and keep moving forward. We were just missing a goal. If we had scored, it would have changed everything. But that’s the game.”

The conditions were inevitably difficult for PSG, who also had to cope without four key players. This was one of the reasons why Olympique de Marseille pushed so hard for the game to be played on Monday rather than delayed for several weeks.

Even so, PSG only lost 1-0 despite dominating large stretches of the match. With 12 shots and 5 on target, it’s clear the Parisians should have scored. Unfortunately, the result turned out differently from what they had hoped. They’ll have a chance to bounce back, either against Auxerre this weekend or against FC Barcelona on October 1st.
