Paris Saint-Germain’s 19-year-old midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery stopped in the mixed zone after the 1-0 victory over Angers this Friday at the Parc des Princes in the second matchday of Ligue 1 2025-2026. He was asked to discuss the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma (26-year-old goalkeeper).

“Donnarumma? I had three exceptional seasons with him. He’s a very good goalkeeper and a perfect person. We just have to thank him. If he stays, it will be with great pleasure. And if he leaves, we will thank him from the bottom of our hearts!”

Negative words would be very badly received, but there’s no reason to think Zaire-Emery isn’t being honest here. Donnarumma has often been described as highly regarded by the squad, and his qualities as a goalkeeper are clear. As are the flaws in his game participation that led coach Luis Enrique to opt for Lucas Chevalier (23 years old).

It’s a strong choice, and one that’s certainly unpleasant for Donnarumma. But that’s part of elite sport. This doesn’t prevent the Italian from maintaining an excellent bond with his teammates at PSG. Seeing him stay would still be problematic for the overall atmosphere and the media hype it would inevitably generate. A move to Manchester City seems on the cards, and let’s all hope it can materialize.
