The Parc des Princes was packed to the rafters on Tuesday evening as Paris Saint-Germain took on PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 3 of the Champions League group stage. Unfortunately, despite an outrageously dominant game, Parisian efficiency was once again lacking. The Red and Blues could do no better than a sad draw (1-1, see the PSG/PSV Eindhoven video summary). PSG captain Marquinhos spoke to Canal+ Sport about this strange evening.
Marquinhos: Efficiency? ‘that’s the most important thing we missed today’.
Was efficiency the only thing missing today?
I think that’s the most important thing we missed today. We had volume, we created chances, we had the things we lacked against Arsenal. We managed to play and create chances but we didn’t manage to convert them and that’s very important in the Champions League. We had chances and they manage to convert one, which changes the whole story of the match. We have to chase, it’s more difficult. The three points are important and a draw at home is not a good result.
Are Paris Saint-Germain missing a number 9?
If you look at the statistics, we’ve scored quite a few goals at the start of the season, particularly more than last year, even though we had a great No 9. It’s normal when you have a great player because we’re going to focus on that, we have good players today, we’ve changed today and we’ve changed the characteristics of our game.
We’ve got great players who can score goals and they’ve already shown that they can do it. We need to work on that in training and in our heads. It’s a decisive moment and in the box we need to have that calmness.
‘I saved a great goal because it could have been a defeat’.
Tell us about your rescue ?
That’s my mentality, that’s what our coach wants. We’re going to play until the 95th minute and it’s the little details that make the difference. Up front and at the back, that’s what we like to do, it’s my passion and helping my team-mates. These are very important things and I really wanted my team to come out on top. I saved a great goal because it could have been a defeat. But those are the things that happen in a match and I really wanted to win so that I could go home happy.
