Lucas Chevalier, the 23-year-old goalkeeper for Lille (under contract until 2027) and the French national team, has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain in the transfer window. L’Equipe reported on Thursday that his future depends largely on that of Gianluigi Donnarumma (26, under contract with PSG until 2026). And the amount needed to convince LOSC is already known.
Chevalier as Donnarumma’s number one replacement?
“His situation depends largely on that of Gianluigi Donnarumma. If the Italian were to leave the capital club, Chevalier would immediately enter the race to succeed him. Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting advisor, has been impressed by him since his time in the north (2017-2020) and would like to make him the Parisian goalkeeper’s replacement.
Chevalier is not closing any doors, but he has no intention of leaving just for the sake of it. He feels at home in Lille and has no reason to take any risks that could jeopardize his position as the number two goalkeeper for Les Bleus. He quickly turned down Bournemouth, who had approached him to try to convince him to join, as well as another English club of similar caliber.
40 million euros for Chevalier’s transfer?
PSG remains, at this point, the most plausible, interesting, and promising option. Unlike André, who has already skipped the first friendly matches, there is no standoff on the horizon. And if PSG came up with €40 million or more, there might not be the same resistance from the northern club’s management.“
Nothing is impossible here, since Donnarumma has not (yet?) extended his contract with PSG and Chevalier is a very good goalkeeper. But nothing is certain either, far from it. It’s worth noting that these statements bring the situation back to where it was in recent months: Paris has a lot of respect for the Lille goalkeeper, but he would only come if the Italian international leaves.
The latter has stated several times, as has his agent, that the priority is to extend his contract. And there is nothing to suggest that PSG sees things any differently. That would be strange after Donnarumma’s excellent performances this season. As for the $40 million transfer fee, that is not certain either. It is not an official price.
So, there is a lot of uncertainty and a situation that could be resolved quickly for the moment, with Donnarumma extending his contract in Paris. And Chevalier is not looking to leave. Perhaps PSG will consider the opportunity later if the Frenchman does not extend his contract. We also cannot rule out the possibility that this rumor is a little pressure from Paris on the Donnarumma clan. Or simply a little publicity stunt to attract attention in a quiet Parisian transfer market.
