Ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, Bixente Lizarazu, former defender for the French national team and Bayern Munich, among others, issued a warning to PSG on Téléfoot. According to him, the real danger for the Parisians lies not only in their opponents’ style of play, but also in their ability to remain composed if the game becomes tight.
Lizarazu: “Frustration is something special.”
“I see all the scenarios favorable to PSG, except one: frustration. Frustration is something special. I experienced it with the French national team when we played against Italy in 2000 (2-1 after extra time),” recalled the former French international, referring to the Euro final.
Lizarazu: “That’s the only danger for PSG: being eliminated because they didn’t manage their frustration well.”
“We had a tournament where we were very good offensively, scoring goals from all angles. We approached this match with the same mindset, and the Italians frustrated us. We lost our composure, we almost got eliminated. That’s the only danger for PSG: being eliminated because they didn’t manage their frustration well.”
Bixente Lizarazu’s comments don’t sound like a direct criticism of PSG, but rather a warning from a former player accustomed to big occasions. In his view, Paris has enough going for them to approach the final with confidence, provided they don’t fall into the trap of a hard-fought match.
It’s precisely here that frustration can become dangerous: when a team used to attacking, creating chances, and dictating the tempo starts to get annoyed because nothing is happening. Recalling his experience with the French national team against Italy at Euro 2000, Lizarazu emphasizes above all the need to remain calm. For Paris Saint-Germain, the challenge will therefore be as much mental as tactical: not to confuse dominance with rushing things.
