Having already secured two European titles, Paris Saint-Germain has now reached a new level. In an interview with L’Equipe, Bixente Lizarazu praised PSG’s performance, while also outlining a new prospect: a European treble that would propel the club into an even more exceptional realm.
Lizarazu: “It’s exceptional.”
“It’s exceptional, especially considering how exhausting the season was. There was the Club World Cup and little preparation. The team suffered a number of injuries. The staff worked well and had a very effective strategy to help the players recover. PSG really picked up the pace starting in February. It’s not easy to win two consecutive titles after a first trophy, where you can easily become complacent and get carried away, but there was consistency.”
Lizarazu doesn’t dwell on the trophy itself. He highlights what gives weight to PSG’s double: the management, the wear and tear, the injuries, and the ability to remain focused after the initial peak. For PSG, it’s essential. The club is no longer judged solely on its talent, but on its maturity.
Lizarazu: “That’s what we need to achieve now.”
“What they’ve already done is exceptional. Few teams have managed to win two Champions Leagues in a row. Well, almost. There’s Zidane’s treble with Real Madrid (2016, 2017, 2018). That’s what we need to achieve now, isn’t it?”
The challenge is issued without being harsh, but it’s clear. By citing Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, Lizarazu places PSG before an almost untouchable benchmark. It’s praise, but also demanding: having proven it can win, Paris must now show if it can reign supreme.
This shift in perspective speaks volumes. PSG is no longer simply dreaming of Europe. It is now expected to be a team capable of establishing a dynasty.
