This Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain secured a 4-2 victory over FC Barcelona on matchday 3 of the 2026-2027 Champions League at the Parc des Princes. Here are the highlights and lowlights from this win.
The hits
❤️ Vitinha, Neves, and Ruiz: A midfield that goes the distance
Barça arrived undefeated, but they left defeated—largely because the Parisian midfield found extra reserves just when the match could have swung the other way. Vitinha was constantly on the move, always offering an option. Neves set the tone by winning the ball high up the pitch, while Ruiz supported the attacks right to the end.
- Neves won the ball and set up Doué for the opening goal.
- Vitinha put Paris back in front in the 81st minute with a superb volley.
- Ruiz finished at the back post in the 86th minute, connecting with a cross from Hakimi.
Paris didn’t control every aspect of the game, but their midfield made a decisive impact when it mattered most. Defeating this Barça side—even with injuries in the squad—makes the victory all the more valuable.
❤️ Doué: Dynamic play and decisive contributions
He took on defenders, linked up play, and forced the opposition back. He drew a yellow card from Cancelo following a dribble, scored the opener in the 38th minute, and later delivered the crucial corner kick that led to Hernandez’s goal—Doué left a clear, tangible mark on the match.
His pass between two defenders to find Hakimi shortly after the break deserved a better finish. While there were still some misplaced passes, his ability to beat his man and create scoring opportunities kept Barcelona under constant threat. Paris needed an attacker to step up and take charge after Dembélé left the pitch—and Doué was that man.
Hernandez steps up, Pacho secures the essentials
Replacing Nuno Mendes to face Yamal had all the makings of a poisoned chalice. Hernandez responded with authority, providing valuable cover and a crucial recovery tackle on Raphinha following a transition. He then rose above Gordon to head home a corner, making it 2-1.
He didn’t keep everything under lock and key—notably failing to track Espart’s run during the Catalans’ first goal—but his overall performance far outweighed that lapse. Pacho also deserves a mention: his goal-line clearance to deny Fermin, following an initial intervention by Safonov, preserved the lead before the break—though it came at the cost of a blow to the face. Both defenders prevented several dangerous situations from escalating into something much worse.
The misses
😡 Three injury-enforced substitutions: the real bad news
With Dembélé replaced in the 20th minute, followed by Marquinhos and Kvaratskhelia in the 59th, Paris lost three starters in a single match. The Georgian even required assistance to leave the pitch.
While the victory was impressive, the physical toll was anything but. Luis Enrique was forced to reshuffle his attack and then his central defensive pairing in the heat of the battle. The severity of the injuries remains to be seen, but this cluster of setbacks is undoubtedly the evening’s biggest negative.
Gaps that left the defense overly exposed
Marquinhos occasionally looked stretched, even if he did manage to make some key interventions against Gordon. The broader concern is that the team allowed too many dangerous runs in behind: Fermin found himself one-on-one with Safonov shortly after the 1-0 goal, and Gavi later carved out a major opportunity following Espart’s equalizer.
While last-ditch interventions limited the damage, they shouldn’t mask the number of chances conceded. Whenever the initial press was bypassed, Paris too often found itself forced into desperate, emergency defending.
Torres: chances created, but not converted
His movement caused problems, and his introduction provided depth. However, Torres was denied twice by García before the break, and later struck the post following a cross from Hakimi in the second half.
He finished without a goal, despite an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.33, according to StatMuse. While the Barcelona goalkeeper deserves some credit, Paris could have extended their lead much earlier. In a match that ended in a 4–2 victory, any criticism should be tempered: his runs were excellent, but his finishing—far less so.
