Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich faced off this Tuesday at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their 2025-2026 Champions League semi-final (the second leg is on Wednesday, May 6). The match ended in a 5-4 victory for PSG. After the game, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany spoke to CBS Sports Golazo.
Kompany: “Luis Enrique won the Champions League this way, so he has no reason to give up. But Bayern Munich has the same idea.”
What was it like watching the match from the sidelines?
I don’t like it (smiles). If I can avoid it, I’ll do my best. Better behavior? It also requires good decisions from the referees (laughs).
Was it one of the best matches in history? What’s your analysis?
It’s hard to sum it up in a few words. The simplest thing is that when you concede five goals in a Champions League match, it’s usually over. But the crazy thing is that we scored four goals and could have scored more. If we have those chances in the return leg, we can score. It’s a clash of ideas tonight. Luis Enrique won the Champions League this way, so he has no reason to give up. But Bayern Munich has the same idea.
So we can have a night like this with talent on both sides. I know the spotlight isn’t on the defenses, but it’s unfair because I saw my defenders winning duels, making great tackles. The intensity of the match made it very open.
No penalty, no corner, according to Kompany.
Exceptional quality from the attackers? Would you like to change anything about this match?
That’s difficult. There were goals from penalties and corners. The penalty wasn’t a penalty in my opinion; the ball went from the body to the hand. And it wasn’t a corner; the ball wasn’t touched. They had chances too. What both teams are doing is because all the players are giving their all so the attackers can express themselves.
We need the runs of the other players. We could keep our defenders on to control the game, but we would also lose offensively. Football is about scoring one more goal than the opponent. We can’t be truly perfect; we need to get the win. We can do it.
Can we expect the same thing next week?
Absolutely, even more. They’ll be coming to the Allianz Arena; we’ll have 75,000 people. We want the crowd to shout; it’s not just noise, it has to have an impact. We’ll be at home; we have to win. There’s no better place to do it.
