Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich’s coach, held a press conference on Tuesday evening after securing qualification for the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-3 victory against Real Madrid (6-4 on aggregate). He was asked about the upcoming matches against Paris Saint-Germain (April 28 at the Parc des Princes and May 6 at the Allianz Arena).
Kompany: “The conviction that we can do it.”
Is PSG a tougher opponent than Real Madrid?
“There are only tough matches, and we don’t have the luxury, at this point, of deciding whether Paris is more difficult than Real Madrid. I think it’s simply the toughest challenge there is, and we will absolutely have to give everything once again to win these matches.” But the conviction that we can achieve this is obviously very much there.”
One can always try to compare teams, wondering if it will be more difficult for Bayern Munich. Kompany doesn’t want to get too caught up in these comparisons, and that’s understandable. There’s no point in putting a team down; it could only hurt him. What’s clear is that he has a major challenge ahead of him with two matches against PSG for a place in the Champions League final.
Of course, for Paris too, it will be a very difficult objective to achieve. That’s normal at this level of competition; in addition, you have the two most exciting teams of the season facing off. Each will believe in their chances and give their all, while knowing that qualification is never guaranteed.
