Paris Saint-Germain defeated Flamengo on penalties (1-1, then 3-1 on penalties) this Wednesday in Doha in the final of the 2025 Intercontinental Cup. After the match, PSG coach Luis Enrique spoke at a press conference.
Luis Enrique: “After the penalty, it was more balanced and more difficult.”
What is your analysis of this match?
“To be honest, we saw a very good match, against a Flamengo team that plays very well. It was very difficult, but the quality and mentality of the players were there, and seeing that spirit was a real pleasure against a very good team.
We had a very good first half, we controlled it well, we were able to press our opponent, but after the penalty, it was more balanced and more difficult.” I have to congratulate Flamengo not only for today’s match, but also for the season.
Have you ever seen a goalkeeper save four penalties?
“No, it’s the first time I’ve seen a goalkeeper save four penalties. But we’re happy to keep winning trophies, and we deserved to win this one.”
Luis Enrique: “Do you really think this is the time to talk about that?”
Does Safonov’s performance reignite the competition and the goalkeeping hierarchy?
“Do you really think this is the time to talk about that? It’s the time to celebrate this trophy, and to congratulate everyone, those who played, those who didn’t, and to be happy for our fans. We want to continue making history. But right now, we just have to enjoy this moment.”
Luis Enrique: “There’s one French Cup match left before the holidays.”
What does it mean to win a sixth trophy here in Doha?
“Six trophies isn’t bad (smiles). For us, it’s always special to come back to Doha. We’re happy every time we’re here. This victory means we’ll have another badge on our shirt for next year. We’ve shown the same mentality as last season again. There’s one French Cup match left before the holidays. After that, our objective will be the same: to keep winning and playing our best football.”
What word would you use to sum up this year with four trophies? And how do you maintain the desire to win for next year?
“Four titles, no, that doesn’t add up, six. You let two trophies slip away there, didn’t you? Six trophies, really not bad, eh! We have to keep going. Keeping making history is our mentality, that’s what we want.”
