PSG vs. OL: It took more than just composure
PSG defeated Lyon 2-0 on Monday, October 26, at the Parc des Princes, as part of the 8th round of Ligue 1. After being held at bay for a long stretch by goalkeeper Greif, Paris finally found the breakthrough thanks to Mayulu and Godts. The win moves them into first place—a result with a backstory that the individual player ratings alone cannot fully capture.
Safonov safeguards the team effort
Dominating a match doesn’t negate the need for a decisive goalkeeper. By denying both Duranville and later Athekame, Safonov ensured the evening didn’t become unnecessarily complicated. That said, a misjudged attempt to claim a corner kick served as a reminder that not everything was perfect. In front of him, Zabarnyi played with precision and discipline. Pacho also provided stability in his distribution, completing 79 out of 80 attempted passes. Such composure is valuable, even in the absence of flashy, highlight-reel moments.
Creating openings, but lacking the final touch
Akliouche and Doué injected movement into an attack that was searching for a way through. With their driving runs, link-up play, and changes of pace, they caused real problems for Lyon. L’Équipe‘s rating of 5 for Akliouche feels harsh, given his overall influence on the game. Doué, meanwhile, might have benefited from making simpler decisions at times. For Torres, the outcome was more frustrating: he made the right runs and found himself in scoring positions, but couldn’t convert—largely because Greif came out on top in their individual duels. The bench provides what was missing
Godts set up Mayulu for the opening goal, then scored himself following a pass from Ndjantou. The substitutes brought the precision that had been lacking until that point. The team’s average ratings—5.59 from Le Parisien and 5.00 from L’Équipe—therefore primarily reflect the performances of the starting lineup; no individual ratings were provided for the substitutes. The discrepancy stems largely from Le Parisien’s more favorable assessment of Hakimi and the team’s creative players.
Luis Enrique finds the solutions
Moving Akliouche into the midfield, followed by the introduction of Mayulu in place of Torres, revitalized the team’s attacking options. The 6 awarded to Luis Enrique by L’Équipe recognizes his effective in-game management: his substitutions turned the team’s dominance into goals—though he could arguably have been rated even higher.
