In the 11th round of Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain hosted OGC Nice and won 1-0 at the Parc des Princes. After the match, 24-year-old PSG striker Gonçalo Ramos discussed his role as a super-sub and the tactics of their opponents.
Ramos: “The victory is the most important thing for the team. I didn’t wait for the goal to feel confident.”
“It’s very difficult to play against these teams, we had to work harder, but it’s important to win. In Ligue 1, they defend a lot, they have eleven goalkeepers, whereas in the Champions League they look us straight in the eye.
Does the goal boost your confidence?
It was a last-minute goal, it’s magnificent. The victory is the most important thing for the team. I didn’t wait for the goal to feel confident, but it’s always good to score.
Ramos: “I come on more often than I start.”
A memorable match for your 100th in Paris?
It’s very difficult to play against teams like that, they defended with a lot of players, but it’s important to win. I didn’t even know it was my 100th match.
“Why do I score more when I come on as a substitute?
Because “I come on more often than I start (laughs).”
This is both good and bad news for the player and for PSG. Knowing that Gonçalo Ramos can be so decisive when he comes off the bench gives them a formidable weapon. But seeing him so ineffective when he starts remains a huge problem.
Given his talent, he should be just as effective as a starter as he is as a substitute. This is a solution that Luis Enrique, who was nonetheless satisfied with his player this Saturday, might also consider.
