Once again heroic against Tottenham (2-2, 4-3 on penalties), Paris Saint-Germain became the first French club to win the UEFA Super Cup. Speaking to PSG TV, 28-year-old forward Ousmane Dembélé reflected on the victory.
Dembélé: “We tried to stay in the game”
“It’s amazing. Honestly, at 2-0 down, especially in the 85th minute, we told ourselves it was going to be tough. But we tried to stay in the game, thinking that with one goal, anything could happen. And as I said, the introductions of Lee Kang-In, Fabián Ruiz, Ibrahim, and Gonçalo did us a lot of good.”
Dembélé: “We could be losing two or three nil, they’ll always be there to push us”
“After a week of training like this, it wasn’t easy, but we went out and got this win, and we’re happy. The fans were exceptional from start to finish. We could be losing two or three nil, and they’ll always be there to push us. It feels good—like we say, they’re the 12th man, and they’re always pushing us, it’s incredible.”
This miraculous victory once again propels PSG to the top of European football. After their defeat in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea (4-0), it looked like they were headed for the same fate on Wednesday against Tottenham. With only a week of training under their belts, the capital club struggled for most of the first 80 minutes.
But it took them barely ten minutes to pile on the pressure and draw level. A magnificent victory, then, for a PSG side that continues to write its own history—and that of French football. Now, a new season begins, with equally high ambitions and the desire to keep adding glorious chapters to this story.
