Paris Saint-Germain faced Tottenham this Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup (2-2, 4-3 on penalties – video highlights here). Following this thrilling victory, PSG head coach Luis Enrique spoke to PSG TV about his team’s win.
Enrique: “It’s so different, I think it’s a miracle”
“What madness! That’s the word—what madness… I have to say I’m very happy. I think we didn’t deserve the win, because the difference between a team like Tottenham, which has had many training sessions, and us, who have only had five… It’s so different, I think it’s a miracle. I’m happy because today we saw, as always, our fans supporting the team throughout the match, even when we were losing 1-0 and then 2-0.”
Enrique: “It’s important to win this trophy”
“In the end, even if I think it wasn’t deserved, I have to say I’m happy for all the players and especially for the fans. It’s important to win this trophy, even if we would have preferred to rest and focus on the upcoming season.
It’s difficult to play a Super Cup final because you have to win the Champions League or Europa League to get there. It’s been strange having such a short holiday, but once again I must say I’m happy with my players. We’re happy, we’re champions!”
It was a victory as beautiful as it was important for PSG, who, without any real preparation, managed to overcome Tottenham despite the English side’s dominance during part of the game. Of course, the defeat is cruel for Spurs, as they led 2-0 before conceding twice late in the match, then leading again in the penalty shootout before being overturned once more.
This still shows PSG’s determination to stay 100% focused throughout the match. They had to fight hard for this win, but it allows them to start the season in the best possible way. After their Champions League triumph, PSG have now etched their name further into French football history by securing the first UEFA Super Cup in their history.
