Renato Sanches, the 27-year-old Portuguese midfielder on loan from Paris Saint-Germain to Benfica Lisbon this season, is almost better known for his stints in the infirmary than his talent. It’s a sad story for a player whose future remains unclear, but according to Record, the Portuguese club have finally come up with an explanation.

Indeed, the Portuguese media reports that Benfica, surprised by these injuries despite serious and precise work, carried out a new battery of tests. A collagen deficiency was detected. A problem explained by a specialist in the newspaper:

“Collagen is like the cement of muscles, and a house, if it has less cement, is more fragile. In this case, there is greater muscular fragility.”

Has the big breakthrough finally been made to help Sanches shake off his terrible injuries and get back into the game? There’s always that hope, and it would be great if the Portuguese midfielder could finally take advantage and show all his qualities.

In the meantime, he unfortunately suffered another injury during the Club World Cup. Let’s hope it’s the last in a depressing cycle. It would also help to clarify his future.
