Paris Saint-Germain traveled to face Stade Rennais this Sunday in the final match of Ligue 1 Matchday 1, coming away with just a single point following a 2-2 draw (video highlights here). After the game, Luis Enrique, the Parisian club’s manager, spoke to PSG TV about his players’ performance.
Luis Enrique: “It was very complicated, very difficult.”
“Today was trickier than usual. In the first half, there were situations we didn’t control. Rennes launched some top-class counter-attacks and managed to score two goals with great precision. It was very complicated, very difficult.
We tried to change things up, and I’m particularly pleased with the five players who came off the bench. They all did a great job. The fans are incredible; regardless of how we perform, they support the team. We thank them and hope to improve. That’s our job, and I hope we can play much better.”
It was a hard-fought match and, above all, a fine comeback by PSG on the opening day of the season. Trailing 2-0 away from home, the task looked daunting for Luis Enrique’s men, who are not yet at 100% physical fitness. Ultimately, however, they managed to turn the tide by injecting the necessary intensity and—crucially—creating scoring chances.
This is a very positive sign; even without the win, the team’s mentality and determination are clearly evident. The Parisians will gradually hit their stride, so patience is required to let the players find their feet and—above all—complete a summer pre-season that has only just begun.
