Here is our ongoing series: 5 compelling reasons to tune in to a match. Ahead of each game, we’ll highlight what makes it worth watching—blending a bit of seriousness with a touch of humor. Please note: this is by no means an exhaustive breakdown. Next up is this Monday ’s clash between Paris Saint-Germain (2nd) and Olympique Lyonnais (1st) at the Parc des Princes, part of Matchday 8 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season (kick-off at 8:30 PM; broadcast on Ligue1+).
5 – Lyon is forging ahead with limited resources.
Like many Ligue 1 clubs, Olympique Lyonnais has had to get by on a shoestring for some time now—to such an extreme, in fact, that they narrowly avoided an administrative relegation at the end of the 2024-2025 season.
Ultimately, OL managed to secure their place in Ligue 1, even while navigating strict constraints in the transfer market. Despite these hurdles, they qualified for the Europa League and have enjoyed a very promising start to the season. It’s as if the adversity forced the club to make exceptionally smart, precise decisions—a success well worth noting.
4 – A match rather than the Ballon d’Or
3 – Which PSG?
Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are sidelined for this high-profile clash, which comes at the end of a demanding run of fixtures—just before a brief chance to catch a breath. There are no midweek matches, but Ligue 1 action resumes this Friday away to Le Havre, followed by a Champions League encounter against Valencia next Tuesday.
Managing the squad is no easy task, balancing the need for rest with the goal of keeping every player engaged. It will be very interesting to see the starting lineup tonight and what substitutions are made.
2 – Mika Godts, an acceleration hoped for.
The 21-year-old forward, who arrived at PSG this summer from Ajax Amsterdam, has yet to be particularly convincing. In fact, he has not played a single minute in the last three matches. Given the current injuries—most notably the long-term absence of Kvaratskhelia—the Belgian will undoubtedly get further opportunities. That could begin tonight, whether he starts or comes off the bench.
We therefore hope to see some positive signs, even if there is still plenty of time. His adaptation needs to progress so that we can once again see the attacking drive he has occasionally displayed—as well as the ability to be decisive, a trait he notably demonstrated during his time at Ajax and with the Belgian national team.
1 – First place in the crosshairs.
It’s a rare scenario: the top two teams face off with an identical number of points—a situation made even more striking given that three other clubs also began the campaign with 14 points. A win tonight would allow the victor to pull slightly ahead, while also sending a powerful statement (especially for OL). While this match isn’t necessarily decisive—the league season is long, after all—it will certainly carry significant weight in this early stage of the campaign.
