Here’s our series. The 5 good reasons to watch a match (with some adjustments here and there). We’ll revisit the compelling aspects before each match with a mix of seriousness and humor. Please note, this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive overview. We continue here with the match between Paris Saint-Germain (6th) and Newcastle (7th) this Wednesday at the Parc des Princes for Matchday 8 of the 2025-2026 Champions League (kick-off at 9 pm, CT).

5 – Confirm the progress of the last two years.

Just over two years ago, PSG struggled against Newcastle in the last group stage: a 4-1 away defeat and a 1-1 draw at home. This was due, in particular, to some major defensive errors, a difference in efficiency, and difficulties in meeting the physical challenge. The English team may have changed a bit too, but the style and core of the team remain. Paris seems much better equipped as a team; this is their chance to prove it.

4 – Which attack?

In recent weeks, Désiré Doué (20), Bradley Barcola (23), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24), and Ousmane Dembélé (28) have all had their ups and downs. It’s difficult to know which one will be on the bench tonight, especially with the possibility of seeing Doué in midfield. Furthermore, we can’t be entirely certain of their effectiveness tonight. The talent is there; they just need to rediscover some simplicity and composure. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of evening it will be.

3 – João Neves returns.

The 21-year-old midfielder hasn’t been out for long, but it’s still noteworthy. We should see him back tonight, possibly in the starting lineup. His energy will be a welcome addition, as will his tireless movement. Perhaps also his knack for making the decisive move. He’s certainly an extra asset.

2 – Achraf Hakimi too!

The 27-year-old right-back hasn’t played for PSG since early November, due to his ankle injury and then the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco. This time, he should be back. Warren Zaïre-Emery (19-year-old midfielder) performed very well during his absence, but Hakimi remains the specialist in that position and one of the best in the world.

1 – The top 8, a shared objective.

The two teams are neck and neck in the standings, even on goal difference. However, PSG has scored more goals and conceded more. The battle for a place in the top 8, which guarantees a spot in the Round of 16 without going through the playoffs, is clear. It will be very intense, probably spectacular. Let’s hope PSG manages to come out on top so it’s a festive occasion too.
