Here is our ongoing series: 5 great reasons to tune in to a match. Ahead of each game, we’ll highlight the most compelling aspects—blending a bit of seriousness with a touch of humor. Please note that this is by no means an exhaustive look at the subject. Next up is the match featuring Paris Saint-Germain (1st) this Tuesday against Villarreal (19th) at the Estadio de la Cerámica, as part of Matchday 4 of the 2026-2027 Champions League (kick-off at 9:00 PM; CET).
5 – A different, attack-minded opponent.
In the Champions League, you often end up facing the same opponents time and again. That’s not the case for PSG and Villarreal, who will get the chance to encounter someone new. Furthermore, they are up against a side with an attacking philosophy—a recipe for an entertaining spectacle. All the better; we love a fast-paced European night.
4. Which left-back?
In the absence of Nuno Mendes (24), a question arises—particularly in the Champions League—as to who should fill the left-back position. Lucas Hernandez (30) performed very well against FC Barcelona, but one should be cautious about reading too much into a single exceptional outing. Lucas Digne (33) offers more going forward, though his recent form has not been particularly convincing. Then there is Warren Zaïre-Emery (20), who is often impressive in midfield or as a right-back, but he struggles more when asked to adapt to the left side. There is no clear-cut solution, especially when considering the nuances of the Parisian side’s style of play, where positions are rarely fixed.
3. A difficult 9 to choose.
Here, too, an absence—that of Ousmane Dembélé (29-year-old forward)—raises questions. Ferran Torres (26) and Senny Mayulu (20) come to mind; the former has more experience and performed excellently early in the season, while the latter has been in better form during recent matches. Maghnes Akliouche (24) and Désiré Doué (21) could also slot into a central role, leaving a flank open for Mika Godts (21). In any case, the decision will provide an indication of the level of competition within the squad and the style of play intended for this evening.
2. Vitinha, a maestro in top form.
Vitinha (a 26-year-old midfielder) went through a bit of a dip in form, but he appears to be returning to his best in recent weeks. It would be a shame not to fully appreciate this—not only because of his importance to PSG, but simply for the joy of watching such a player express himself on the pitch. The most beautiful thing is that everything he does looks effortless; yet, he is one of the few players capable of performing at his level. All one can do is savor it.
1. Moving toward qualification.
That is always the main priority: to stay in the Champions League for as long as possible. There’s no secret to how you do that—you have to pick up points. Both teams need them and will put up a fight, even if Villarreal is under greater pressure. Paris has set its sights very high and cannot afford to ease off now. We can look forward to what should be a fantastic match.
