Julian Alvarez, the 26-year-old Argentinian striker for Atletico Madrid (under contract until 2030), was linked with Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 when he left Manchester City. But the idea of a transfer to Paris has recently resurfaced. El Desmarque confirmed PSG’s interest, citing a request from coach Luis Enrique.
“Only PSG would be able to pay such a sum.”
FC Barcelona is closely monitoring the Argentinian striker and has made him their priority. Now, another giant has entered the race for the 26-year-old: Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain, who covet him and have made a specific request. The Asturian coach envisions an attacking trio for next season, with Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé, Georgian Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and the former River Plate player leading the line.
Real Madrid are demanding a substantial sum to release the Argentinian, no less than €200 million. Only PSG would be able to afford such a sum, although the player could decide his future after the 2026 World Cup with Argentina.
Despite playing in a lower division, PSG are a continental powerhouse with a virtually unlimited budget. They could therefore pay whatever amount the Metropolitano demands. Paris wants to finalize this transfer before other European giants enter the race.
It’s the rumor of the moment, and all the media outlets are jumping on it. But that’s not enough to make him a particularly likely signing for PSG. There’s nothing concrete, and we know that every year there’s a frenzy around very little, simply to generate buzz. Above all, we see some media outlets, particularly in Spain, mentioning the €200 million figure as if it were nothing for Paris. There’s always this image of a wealthy club spending recklessly. Yet, we’ve actually seen Paris negotiate in recent years, like with João Neves (21-year-old midfielder) or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (25-year-old striker).
Also, rumors that drag on for weeks without any confirmation tend not to materialize. They simply kept the discussions going while waiting for PSG’s real targets, several of which were only revealed a few days before. The transfer has been fully agreed upon. Therefore, extreme caution is advised, even though Alvarez is an excellent player who seems well-suited to Luis Enrique’s style of play. There are also some controversies surrounding the French and Argentinian national teams that could be a hindrance, especially since Paris has managed to build a cohesive group free of tensions that could disrupt the club’s operations.
