Rodri, the 30-year-old Spain and Manchester City midfielder (under contract until 2027), has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain during this transfer window, even though he appeared to be leaning towards Real Madrid. However, Le Parisien insists that a move to PSG is not on the cards.
An already well-stocked area.
The explanation from the Paris-based newspaper is simple and logical: PSG is not looking to recruit in midfield. It would take a golden opportunity—and even then, it is unlikely. It is an area that is already very well-staffed.
Coach Luis Enrique previously felt compelled to apologize in a press conference—following the Champions League final against Arsenal—for benching Warren Zaïre-Emery (20). It would seem risky for the squad’s balance to add a big-name player to compete with the likes of Fabian Ruiz (30), Vitinha (26), and João Neves (21). Not to mention Senny Mayulu (20), who will be looking to make his mark, though he can also rely on his versatility to secure playing time.
PSG also wants to rely on its young talents. There is Dro Fernandez (18), signed from FC Barcelona last winter, as well as academy product Quentin Ndjantou (19), who is returning from injury after a promising start. Additionally, Désiré Doué (21) could well play in midfield, depending on attacking recruitment.
Priorities leaning towards the attack.
There is far more reason to focus efforts in that area following the departures of Gonçalo Ramos and Lee Kang-In, with Bradley Barcola potentially following suit. There is no need to get sidetracked by a battle for an additional midfielder. The defense could also be further reinforced, although the situation remains unclear on that front.
In any case, Rodri is likely to stay away from PSG. The club may simply have floated the idea of interest to put pressure on Real Madrid regarding their transfer pursuit. The rumor could also stem from the player’s entourage, possibly with a contract extension at City in mind.
