Renato Sanches, Paris Saint-Germain’s 27-year-old midfielder under contract until 2027, has returned to Benfica Lisbon on loan with an option to buy, after a season with AS Roma under this guise, which was mitigated by further physical problems. We are now waiting to find out what his future holds. On Thursday, A Bola confirmed the idea of a follow-up at the Portuguese club. But it’s not a foregone conclusion.
“A BOLA confirms: Renato Sanches could stay in Lisbon. This is the player’s wish, but an agreement with PSG will only be reached under certain conditions, which will be similar to the first agreement: a loan with an option to buy with the salary taken over.”
A credible situation, even if we still have to wait for something concrete to be certain. Sanches may want to stay at Benfica, his training club and probably his only chance of playing in a European competition next season.
As for the Portuguese club, keeping the midfielder is not insane. He’s got talent, everyone knows that. The trick is to find a way of getting him out of his usual bouts of sick leave. A loan would limit the financial risk, especially without paying his full salary.
PSG may not be thrilled, but they may be short of other really interesting options. Above all, we need to keep our fingers crossed for a full season at last, so that the option to buy is exercised, or another club wants to try its luck. Today, there doesn’t seem to be any other way out. Let’s wait and see, though, as the mercato can always surprise.
