This summer, the first Club World Cup took place and, despite much concern and criticism in the lead-up, it was a success. At least financially, since FIFA, according to The Guardian, would like to accelerate the pace by moving to a competition every two years rather than the currently planned four.
When there were complaints about the seasons being too busy for players, FIFA President Gianni Infantino put forward the argument that the competition should only be held every four years. That’s already a lot of busy summers, between the Euro, the World Cup, and the Copa America. If this change of pace were to continue, it would be every year for some players.
They’re hard to feel sorry for, because their job is far from unpleasant and the salaries are obscene. But there are still some limits to be respected for health reasons. But these limits are constantly changing for the sake of the money to be made. On the part of both clubs and players, who are always negotiating upwards rather than launching a clear movement for fewer matches.
Knowing that it’s also specified that the Club World Cup could also increase to 48 teams instead of 32, in order to ensure that more big clubs are involved, which would push for the change. Let’s wait and see, though; nothing has yet been finalized for this change, which would take effect from 2029.
