Paris Saint-Germain played their first league match of the season against Nantes this Sunday in the closing fixture of Ligue 1’s opening round (0-1, video highlights here). After the game, head coach Luis Enrique spoke to PSG TV about his team’s performance.
Enrique: “Improving our ability to use the ball is very important”
*”The most important thing is the three points. At the same time, I think the team played well. We deserved this win, but it was tough because Nantes defended very well with a low block.
At the moment, improving our fitness levels and our ability to use the ball is very important. If we want to be in a position to win everything, and prepare ourselves for that, then we need all of our players. Right now, being able to rotate and involve many players is crucial—it’s a sine qua non condition.”*
It wasn’t the most spectacular game for PSG, but this first win is valuable, both to build confidence and as part of their ongoing preparation. Away to a Nantes side that was already well-prepared, Paris could have easily fallen into a trap match and been caught off guard by an opponent ready to spring a surprise.
In the end, however, Luis Enrique’s men largely controlled proceedings. They created several chances (18 shots, 5 on target) before eventually breaking through to secure all three points. A solid start, then, for PSG in the league—one that sets the tone as the team looks to build momentum in the weeks ahead.
