Kylian Mbappé, the 26-year-old forward for Real Madrid and the French national team, spoke at a press conference this Wednesday ahead of France’s match against Ukraine tomorrow (2026 World Cup qualifier). He was notably asked about the recent struggles of Lucas Chevalier, the 24-year-old goalkeeper for Les Bleus, since joining Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappé “just needs to understand which club he’s at.”
“It’s normal — he’s arrived at PSG, the biggest club in France and one of the best in Europe. People don’t look at what you do well, but at what you don’t do. He’s made a few mistakes along the way, which is normal when you play for PSG. He just needs to understand which club he’s at.
He’ll adapt. His club, his coach, and his teammates trust him. I’m not worried about him — PSG is a step up for him. He’ll get there; he has the quality to succeed.” (comments relayed by Foot Mercato)
Chevalier will surely appreciate the support from the French national team captain, who knows PSG inside out after spending seven years in the capital. Whatever one thinks of his own time there, Mbappé clearly understands the pressure that comes with playing in Paris — and the level of expectation that weighs on every match.
Perhaps he’ll be able to share a few words of advice, though Chevalier is undoubtedly well supported within the club by the players, staff, and management. There’s always a natural period of adaptation — something that tends to be forgotten quickly as soon as the first whistle blows and judgments are made too soon.
Chevalier hasn’t been at his best so far, but that doesn’t define his future. Let’s hope he soon delivers a standout performance that truly launches his PSG journey.
