Matvey Safonov, the 26-year-old goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain and Russia, has had a shortened international break. He played in the 1-1 draw against Peru, but will officially return before the second match against Chile.

“Matvey Safonov will not travel to Sochi to face Chile with the Russian national team!
No injury; the goalkeeper is returning to Paris after playing the entire match against Peru!”
There’s no precise explanation yet, except that it’s not an injury. Which is already good news. Safonov can be rested, but he’s getting little playing time at PSG, and one would have thought he’d take full advantage of this break to regain match fitness and confidence. Let’s hope, then, that he’s not physically injured.
