In an interview with Top Mercato, Youssouf Mulumbu, a former midfielder who came up through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system, offered a candid reflection on his time in the capital. The Congolese international admitted to lacking the necessary discipline at the crucial moment of establishing himself, a confession that sheds light on a pivotal period in his career.

Mulumbu: “The problem was more me”

“The problem was more me. Perhaps I didn’t put in all the effort. I didn’t fully grasp the effort I needed to make to establish myself at PSG.

I think there was a point where I thought it was already a done deal since I had already signed a professional contract. I think that at PSG, I became a bit complacent.”

Youssouf Mulumbu’s words serve as a stark reminder of what Paris Saint-Germain represents for a young player: an environment where the margin for error is minuscule. The former midfielder explains that he “rested on his laurels” after signing his first professional contract, convinced too soon that the hardest part was behind him.

This almost brutally honest admission illustrates how the transition from the youth academy to the daily demands of a club like Paris can crush those who are not mentally prepared. Mulumbu admits to having underestimated the level of effort required, acknowledging that the problem stemmed from him more than from the circumstances. This confession is reminiscent of the trajectories of many Parisian talents who, lacking intensity and consistency, never managed to take the decisive step towards the very highest level.
