Paris Saint-Germain and Sporting Lisbon faced off this Tuesday at the Estádio José Alvalade in Matchday 7 of the 2025-2026 Champions League. The match ended in a 2-1 defeat for PSG. After the game, Sporting Lisbon coach Rui Borges spoke at a press conference, notably responding to comments made by his PSG counterpart, Luis Enrique.
Borges said, “There are many strategies, and that’s what makes football what it is.”
Luis Enrique spoke of a very defensive tactic and a match that PSG dominated, which he felt they deserved to win.
I understand. They played a great match, that’s for sure. Apart from the disallowed goals, there were two dangerous shots. In the first half, Rui Silva made a great save, and in the second half, Dembélé had a shot that Rui also saved. They put us under pressure, close to our penalty area.
But there’s also the other side: strategy. In football, there are many strategies, and that’s what makes football what it is. In our league, we also face teams that play with a low block, and we have to know how to beat them.
Borges said, “Given our strategy and our strengths, I couldn’t ask for more from our team.”
And today, it was our turn to play with that low block, and we had to be committed. And we were, within the framework of the required organization. I have no adjective to describe what the team was able to do. Fantastic. As was the case against Bayern, where we ended up conceding goals from set pieces, that’s why we were very focused on those aspects today. So, given our strategy and our strengths, I couldn’t ask for more from our team.
