Paris Saint-Germain defeated Liverpool 2-0 this Wednesday at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their 2025-2026 Champions League quarter-final (second leg on April 14). Following the victory, PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov (27 years old) spoke to reporters in the mixed zone.
Safonov: “2-0 isn’t a guarantee”
Everyone has to put in the effort; is that the only way to win the Champions League?
I think today we showed that we’re ready to give our all, our energy, and put it all on the pitch. We showed that. We got the result today. If we continue to work like this, I think there’s a chance we can win the Champions League a second time. But the most important thing is to focus on the next match. 2-0 isn’t a guarantee; it’s just the path forward.
Safonov: “You can’t say that Liverpool didn’t do what they needed to do.”
Surprised by Liverpool’s lack of aggression? How was your evening?
We were ready for Liverpool’s attack, and everyone did a very hard job. You saw that it worked. I’m very happy that we didn’t give Liverpool any chances to score. That’s how it is; you can’t say that Liverpool didn’t do what they needed to do.
Frustrating to feel like you could have scored more?
I’m very happy. We didn’t concede a goal, we didn’t give them any chances. For me, it’s fantastic. I didn’t concede a goal with this style of play; it’s fantastic.
Safonov: “Anything can change.”
A different match at Anfield?
We were ready today. We’ll see how the next match goes. Every match is different. It will be tough, it’s not over yet.
Are your opponents afraid of you since the Champions League victory?
I don’t think so, because winning last year doesn’t mean anything. It’s a new year, a new league. What happened before isn’t very important. Anything can change. Nobody knows who’s going to win this year.
