Bradley Barcola, a 23-year-old forward signed by Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023 on a contract running until June 2028, has established himself at both PSG and the French national team. However, in Paris, he remains something of a substitute for big matches. His situation is fueling rumors ahead of this summer transfer window, with speculation ranging from a contract extension to a departure. Many media outlets and journalists reported this Sunday that the international player is refusing to extend his contract and is heading toward an exit. Journalist Romain Beddouk (Ici Paris) clarifies that this choice is being driven by certain people close to him, whereas his agents were actually pushing for an extension.
Having your head filled with ideas by close associates—leading you to believe in an alternative reality—is the classic pitfall for footballers.
Barcola refusing to extend because he feels PSG’s sporting project doesn’t respect him? You have to realize the absurdity of what they’ve got him believing.
An important clarification regarding this matter: by “close associates,” I don’t mean his representatives—they actually want him to extend.
By “close associates,” I mean his inner circle (friends, etc.).
These are interesting details coming from a journalist who isn’t in the habit of spreading rumors and certainly wouldn’t have made such a claim at random; he likely has solid information. It wouldn’t be the first time a player changed his career plans based on the “advice” of close associates—advice that might be overly ambitious. It can pay off, of course, but we’ve also seen some spectacular failures. Take defender/midfielder Tanguy Kouassi, for instance: a PSG academy product who left very early on, despite initially intending to stay in Paris.
Barcola’s situation is different. He may not have enjoyed finishing the Champions League campaign as a substitute. However, that was the logical outcome of the competition for places following an injury and a struggle to regain his form. Prior to that, during the knockout stages, he had actually started ahead of players like Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. In any case, head coach Luis Enrique is not the type to set roles in stone.
But the French international has evidently made his choice—which could simply be down to a desire to experience a different league. Liverpool, for instance, are looking for a winger this summer and have reportedly been in contact with him. It is certainly a tempting opportunity. One must respect career choices; they are never easy. Hopefully, PSG will handle the situation well; presumably, plans are already in place to recruit a replacement.
