Zion Suzuki, the 23-year-old Japanese goalkeeper (turning 24 on August 21) who was under contract with Parma until 2029, came close to joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer. However, the move fell through at the last minute. Ultimately, the Japanese international officially signed with Aston Villa in a deal valued by the media at €35 million—the same figure originally planned for the PSG move.
As recently as last Friday, Suzuki was on the verge of joining PSG. By Saturday, the transfer was reported as off following a last-minute demand from his agents (reportedly around €5 million). Given that the move to Aston Villa was finalized just days later, it is likely that talks were already underway. It is easy to see why: Aston Villa is an excellent destination, with a club currently establishing itself at the top tier of a major league—not to mention the prospect of playing in the Champions League.
Furthermore, the Japanese keeper secures a starting role rather than facing uncertainty regarding competition for the spot or a potential loan move. That is the nature of football—things move fast—and choosing stability makes perfect sense for the goalkeeper.
