Due to an unplayable pitch at the Parc des Princes, the Matchday 1 fixture of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season between Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes had to be relocated just days before the game. It will ultimately take place at Roazhon Park, Rennes’ home stadium. RMC Sport reports that the Breton club wants the return fixture—scheduled for the weekend of March 6 (Matchday 23)—to be played at home as well.
“A disadvantage, then, for Stade Rennais.”
“In addition to this first leg, the Bretons hope to host the return match at Roazhon Park in a few months, as originally planned. Under the regulations, this could be possible. According to RMC Sport, the competitions committee has not officially sanctioned a reversal of the home and away fixtures. Even though this Sunday’s match is being played in Rennes, it is still technically the PSG vs. Rennes fixture.
The Breton club can argue that this sudden change of plans, coming just four days before the match, puts them in a difficult position. Ticket sales will only open this Thursday at 2:00 PM. To try and fill Roazhon Park, prices are expected to be lowered—roughly 50% cheaper than the rates usually charged for such a high-profile match. A disadvantage, then, for Stade Rennais.”
While it is understandable for Rennes to defend its interests vigorously, there is arguably a lack of class in this dispute. Given the stature of the match, Roazhon Park would likely fill up this Sunday anyway, so a 50% price cut isn’t necessarily required. It is a shame for the spirit of solidarity and sport. However, it is also clear that PSG is at fault regarding the pitch, even if conditions were challenging. Hopefully, this situation won’t turn into another “battle” within French football, marked by tense public statements. Ligue 1 really doesn’t need that as it fights to hold its own among Europe’s major leagues.
