Here is the next installment in our “Analysis” series, taking a visual look back at a Paris Saint-Germain match to highlight a few key points. We are focusing on two sequences from the 2–2 draw against Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy during Matchday 2 of the 2026–2027 Ligue 1 season: the loss of possession shortly before Lille opened the scoring, and the subsequent play that led to the goal.

Just before conceding the goal, the Parisian defense faced a major scare. Following a spell of high pressing by Lille that prevented PSG from playing out from the back, Willian Pacho (24-year-old defender) attempted a long ball, likely aiming for Achraf Hakimi (27-year-old right-back). However, the ball only reached the center of the pitch, finding an unmarked Felix Correia. He had time to take a shot, though it went wide.

This loss of possession encapsulates two things PSG needs to rediscover: confidence and precision. Pacho could simply have played the ball to Lucas Beraldo (22), but he appeared to rush, eager to escape the danger zone after several previous attempts to play out had been thwarted by Lille. Furthermore, the Parisians—still lacking match fitness—were lacking precision.

Signaling PSG’s lack of confidence against the press, Matvey Safonov (27-year-old goalkeeper) signaled after Correia’s shot that he was going to play a long ball. He aimed for Torres, but the latter failed to control it. Amidst a potential foul, the incident sparked controversy.

That is certainly the view of the Parisians, who fell into the trap of stopping play to complain—particularly Fabian Ruiz (30-year-old midfielder), and to some extent Vitinha (26-year-old midfielder). Meanwhile, Lucas Beraldo (22) made no real effort to transition into a defensive stance. All three players were virtually at a standstill while Olivier Giroud dropped deep, unmarked. Willian Pacho (24-year-old defender) was also positioned somewhat too far away. The much-vaunted Parisian press upon losing possession was nowhere to be seen.

The midfielders were slow to react, leaving the defense exposed. Pacho seemed to hesitate; he is usually a more decisive, impactful player. Once he stepped up, he should have stayed tight on Giroud to prevent him from playing. Instead, the Lille striker had too much freedom to pick out Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, who made an excellent run involving a change of direction. Warren Zaïre-Emery (20-year-old midfielder) also should have covered for Pacho more quickly, given that protecting the central channel is the priority.

Perhaps his positional shift is taking a toll here, or maybe there was a touch of complacency. The Parisians need to regain confidence in their build-up play, as well as their determination when losing possession. Of course, physical fitness plays a role too.
