Hasan Salihamidžić, former Bayern Munich player (1998–2007) and sporting director (2017–2023), was invited by L’Équipe to comment on the progress of Paris Saint-Germain. While praising the club’s stature, its Champions League triumph, and its outstanding 2025 season, he believes there is still a gap to close with the truly “legendary” clubs.
Salihamidžić: “They have to win again and again.”
“PSG have always been an incredible club, a major force in Europe that was difficult to play against. When you’re able to attract players like Messi and Neymar, it says something. But now they’ve managed to build a real team with one of the best coaches in Europe.
They are on the same level as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern… because they won six trophies. But to become a legend like those clubs, they have to keep winning, again and again. Not just do it once.”
This view seems fairly accurate. PSG have indeed been an important force in world football for some time now. While winning the Champions League represents a major milestone, the club did not come out of nowhere. It’s worth remembering that—especially when it comes from someone who played a key role in the history of such a major institution.
Salihamidžić is also right about the objective PSG must now set themselves to climb the final step. Head coach Luis Enrique, president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, and sporting advisor Luis Campos have all repeated this message since the victory on May 31. The players appear to have understood it as well, frequently expressing their desire to keep winning.
That is how a team leaves a lasting mark on history and how a club truly establishes itself at the very top of the hierarchy. It’s impossible to win all the time—but doing it “only once” over several years would inevitably leave a sense of something missing.
