Fabian Ruiz, the 28-year-old midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain and Spain, has sometimes been much maligned in France by the media and certain fans, but his statistics for club and country command respect. Indeed, L’Equipe reports this Saturday that he could equal an unbeaten record this Sunday in the Spain/Denmark match. At PSG, he is already on track to match the record held by Marquinhos (30-year-old central defender and captain).

“He will equal the record set in the mid-1990s by Julen Guerrero.
“It’s almost six years since Ruiz began his international career with the senior side, in an anonymous trip to the Faroe Islands (4-1, June 7, 2019) under Robert Moreno. Thirty-six games later, the Andalusian has yet to taste defeat.
“If the streak continues on Sunday in Valencia, he will equal the record set in the mid-1990s by Julen Guerrero for the number of matches without defeat for a rookie, both with La Roja and other major teams.
Since a setback against Lorient on April 30, 2023, he has racked up 48 Championship matches without knowing the taste of defeat, equaling Marquinhos’ record between 2014 and 2016 against OM on Sunday.”
It’s impressive, especially as it doesn’t happen by chance. To rub shoulders with such records, you already have to play in these great teams. And not to be a burden. Ruiz isn’t always the most spectacular player, the one everyone prefers to see. But there’s no denying that he has his place at the highest level.
Of course, we hope he’ll be able to grab these fine records, which will serve as a reminder to those who don’t want to hear that he’s a great midfielder. Even if it’s more in terms of positioning, collective balance and the quality of his passes, than in terms of spectacular gestures. He’ll always lack a little vivacity, but Ruiz is a great footballer.
