Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 26, told a press conference that he was going through the best period of his career. After a difficult start in France, the Italian claims to have regained his confidence and balance, key elements in his current blossoming at PSG.
Donnarumma “I wasn’t received the way I deserved”.
“The best period of my career? That’s what I’m experiencing right now,” he assures us. There were difficult moments, even when I came back here to Coverciano (after leaving AC Milan) and there were moral difficulties because I wasn’t received as I deserved. Now I’m happy to have regained confidence, balance and the right mentality.”
At PSG, Donnarumma epitomises the difficulty of being alternately praised and criticised by the fans. A goalkeeper can be adulated after a decisive save, then criticised for the slightest mistake.
This media instability undermines confidence: only players with great mental strength manage to overcome this emotional rollercoaster. For Donnarumma, staying focused and not letting judgement get to him has become essential if he is to last at the highest level.
