Paris Saint-Germain faced RC Lens this Sunday in the Trophée des Champions, losing 1-0 after a frustrating match. Speaking to PSG TV, Ilya Zabarnyi, the 23-year-old Parisian defender, reflected on this first defeat of the season.
Zabarnyi: “We’re going to focus on the next match, and we’re going to win.”
“We simply failed to convert our chances. We created plenty, but sometimes that’s just football. You can win, you can lose—that’s the game. We’re going to prepare for the rest of the season, knowing how tough it is. It is absolutely vital for us, as a team, to get back on track. We’re going to focus on the next match, and we’re going to win.”
After their UEFA Super Cup victory, PSG failed to build momentum and suffered a defeat against their closest rivals. Falling behind in the 30th minute, the Parisians were never able to regain the upper hand. They created too few chances and faced too much intensity from the Sang et Or, who were determined to win in front of their home crowd.
Unfortunately, PSG will not secure a second trophy during this opening month of the season. It also highlights that the Parisians are far from match-fit; it will take several more weeks before they are a competitive squad capable of playing with their usual intensity.
