PSG clearly wanted to win, but also to manage the game before their first encounter with Bayern Munich. They achieved their objectives perfectly with a solid performance and a well-deserved 3-0 victory. This win puts them in a more comfortable position in the title race.
Indeed, Lens had staged a remarkable comeback the previous day in Brest, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. The 3-3 draw is a remarkable feat considering they were down 3-0 at halftime, especially away from home, but the two “dropped” points are excellent news for PSG.
Meanwhile, Lyon secured the essentials with their victory against Auxerre, even if they lacked a bit of composure. The introduction of Corentin Tolisso in the 59th minute (1-1) proved a real boost for OL, who were able to take a 3-1 lead thanks in particular to a goal and an assist from the attacking midfielder. Auxerre had a few minutes of hope at the end of the match (3-2, 88th minute), but couldn’t secure a point that could have been valuable.
Lyon thus defended their third place (there might even be a glimmer of hope for a surprise second place), while Lille remain on the same number of points and tied on goal difference thanks to a hard-fought but valuable victory away to Paris FC. Rennes also had to battle in the derby against Nantes, but finally found the solutions in stoppage time to stay within striking distance of the competition. All the while, they distanced themselves from the rivals.
Indeed, Marseille finished the day with a very mixed performance against Nice and, to make matters worse, conceded a late equalizer. Monaco, for their part, stumbled against a tenacious Toulouse side, despite a 2-0 deficit at the first half, given Toulouse’s poor start. But Carles Martinez Novell’s team managed to respond and hold on to a draw against a team that dropped valuable points, confirming a recent dip in form.
Finally, while Nantes dropped more points and continue their slide towards Ligue 2, Le Havre and Metz played out a particularly spectacular 4-4 draw. An entertaining match to watch, but one that benefits neither team. Le Havre is still not safe from relegation, while Metz failed to capitalize on other results to climb back up the table. Relegation is virtually guaranteed.
