On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain took on Liverpool at Anfield in the return leg of the Champions League Round of 8, 2024-2025. Andrew Robertson, the English team’s 31-year-old left-back, spoke to Amazon Prime after England’s penalty shoot-out victory (1-1 on aggregate, then 1-4 on penalties – Liverpool/PSG video highlights).
Robertson: “It was just two very good teams playing against each other”.
Elimination?
That’s the competition. Obviously, we won last week without playing at our best. I think we played much better today. That’s soccer, you end up on the wrong side of the result. But you can’t question the effort, the will, everything we put into this game.
It was just two very good teams facing each other, and when it comes to penalties, it’s always a lottery, and unfortunately for us, we’re on the wrong side. I couldn’t be prouder of the players, of all the effort we put in, and it’s a shame those efforts weren’t rewarded.
Robertson “it’s a huge disappointment.”
A second half dominated, but without scoring?
I think there was a lot of talk last week about them not taking their chances. I don’t think we ever took our chances. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to come back and score, which would have enabled us to qualify.
We’ve got a lot to look back on, but I think there will be a lot of positives from this game. Obviously, it’s a huge disappointment not to qualify.
Robert “we had the toughest game of the whole Champions League.”
Will Liverpool consider this match a “missed opportunity”?
I think that by finishing top of our group, we had the most difficult match of the whole Champions League. PSG are a fantastic team, with threats all over the pitch, and if they play at this level, they should go far in the competition. Obviously, we had a very tough game and we thought we could qualify.
At times, we showed we could do it. If luck had been a little more on our side, we might have been the ones celebrating. But that wasn’t the case and we need to pull ourselves together. We have a cup final [on Sunday] and we have to fight for the Premier League after the international matches.
Any answer on Sunday in the final against Newcastle?
We’re still bouncing back. There are a lot of tired legs and we have to recover properly, we have to be ready to go, but we will be. We enjoy cup finals and they’re the most important matches.
Once they’re over, we’ve had a very intense period, we have a bit of a break [with] the international matches and then we throw ourselves fully into the Premier League.
