Liverpool manager Arne Slot held a press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Fulham. He was asked to look ahead to the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the 2-0 first-leg defeat, he emphasized his ambition and confidence.
Slot said, “We can show that we are much more competitive.”
“If there’s one positive takeaway from this match against PSG, it’s that we faced the European champions and we weren’t at our best that night, but in four or five days, we can show that we’re much more competitive. It also shows us that if we want to continue to progress, we have to play at this level in the Champions League.
We want to participate next season to show that we can do even better in this competition, and to do that, we need to improve in the league. Not all of our players are capable of playing another intense match in a few days, so let’s see what the lineup holds for us,” these comments were reported by Foot Mercato.
It’s understandable that the Liverpool manager is trying to instill hope around his team. Giving up is out of the question. Especially since there’s some truth in his words, with the Reds capable of bouncing back in the return leg. It’s a completely different match; we clearly saw a difference in performance last season in the Round of 16. Two matches don’t necessarily follow each other in football.
Be warned, PSG are also aware of this and arrive with the confidence of a victory, but the circumstances are still different. The Parisians can also deliver another great performance. However, it’s crucial not to assume it will be easy. This is another high-level match, and everything can change very quickly. It could very well go Paris’ way again.
