Last February, Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain’s 22-year-old left-back, extended his contract until 2030. Speaking on the French show Rothen s’enflamme on Thursday, the Portuguese international had this to say on the subject.
Mendes “From the first day I arrived, I felt something for this club”
You extended your contract: was that the only possible choice for you?
“No, there are always choices. PSG is where I feel good. I love my team-mates, I feel at home. I’ve got my whole family here, I’ve got a lot of family in France.”
You’ve even got your “dad” Luis Enrique here!
“Yes, my team-mates are my brothers! I feel at home. From the first day I arrived, I felt something for this club because they welcomed me. Even the players and the people outside, they’re all welcoming. It’s a country that’s welcomed me. I’m happy for that. I have to do my best for the club.”
And you speak French very well.
“Yes, I took lessons. Afterwards, there were a lot of young French players. I tried to stay with them and understand what they were saying. The club doesn’t force it, but I think it’s important to speak the language in the country you’re in.
It’s also a form of respect. When I go to the supermarket, I have to speak, so I try to do my best. Today, I speak well and I’m still trying to learn. I can’t write, it’s complicated!”
Nuno Mendes has established himself as one of the best in his position. For PSG, who need to keep their best young players, it was therefore essential to extend his contract. Totally committed to the club and the project, Nuno Mendes will continue to make a huge contribution to the team over the coming seasons.
Virtually indispensable in Luis Enrique’s system, he fits in perfectly with the Spanish tactician’s requirements. At just 22 years of age, Nuno Mendes also has enormous room for improvement, and it is in this respect that his extension was vital for PSG and its project.
