In August 2023, La Liga (the Spanish league) and its president Javier Tebas officially announced a complaint to the European Commission against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. The idea was to denounce the money received by the states (Qatar and Abu Dhabi) as unfair competition. The verdict is in.
“Manchester City and PSG escape any EU sanctions following La Liga’s complaint of breaches of competition law. The European Commission considers the evidence insufficient. Tebas accused clubs of benefiting from unfair state funding”
PSG and Manchester City came out on top in the face of this attempt, which has since been somewhat forgotten, if we’re honest. La Liga has been much less vocal on the subject of late. Perhaps Tebas has chosen other battles for the time being. It has to be said that complaining about unfair financing alongside the very borderline set-ups found by FC Barcelona every year is difficult. Just as Real Madrid has already received some nice help too.
In any case, the two clubs that were targeted will not be punished and can continue to move forward. As far as Paris is concerned, the project is even moving in the right direction. The club’s revenues are up, and its wage bill is a little more prudent. Not to mention some pleasing sporting results, which should help further.
