Warren Zaïre-Emery, Paris Saint-Germain’s 18-year-old midfielder, stopped by the mixed zone after the 1-2 defeat to Atlético de Madrid this Wednesday at the Parc des Princes as part of Day 4 of the Champions League 2024-2025 league phase. He spoke of a very painful result with a repeat of the scenario.

Zaire-Emery “It’s often the same thing”.

“It’s often the same thing. The only thing we’re lacking is the ability to score goals. We have our game plan, it’s always the same. If we scored every chance we created, we wouldn’t be losing games.

The balance sheet, when you look at the points, is rather negative, but when you look at the games, it’s rather positive. Some periods are like that, that’s soccer.

It’s a lot, it’s repeated, but we work hard in training. (…) We’re not worried, we’re doing everything we can to win all our games, we give our all every time”, comments relayed by So Foot.

It’s hard to argue with Zaire-Emery. We can’t forget that PSG were interesting and dominant in the game. But there’s no denying that the chances aren’t coming in and that the underachievers are lacking. So we need to work hard, and perhaps rethink things.

But we don’t want to throw everything away or turn things upside down either. After all, it’s almost exclusively success that’s lacking, whereas Atlético have been devilishly effective here. It’s all very frustrating, but let’s just say it’s part of the learning curve in the Champions League.

Except that if you don’t want to suffer a huge disillusionment, you have to learn relatively quickly. Maybe it’s just a matter of finding the right trigger. The return of Gonçalo Ramos (23) should help with his instincts in front of goal, even if he still has some growing up to do. Perhaps a winter signing could help.
