Marquinhos, the 31-year-old defender and captain of Paris Saint-Germain, spoke to Canal+ after the victory (2-2, then 4-3 on penalties) against Tottenham on Wednesday at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine in the 2025 European Super Cup.
Marquinhos: “I’m proud.”
Is your team indestructible?
I’m proud. We didn’t have much preparation time, but it’s clear that soccer isn’t just about physical fitness, it’s also about mental strength, positioning, and tactics. Tottenham was leading 2-0, then they sat back, inviting us to come back, and that’s dangerous when they invite us to come back and fight for the game. We made changes that gave us what we needed. We needed a number 9 to put the ball in the back of the net. For the penalties, we put our trust in Lucas. We know him, he’s just arrived, and it’s good to feel reassured. I’m very happy. Our penalty takers did a good job.
Marquinhos: “Welcome to him with a trophy. It was a final, he had to deliver, and he did very well.”
Was there pressure on your new goalkeeper?
That’s PSG. That’s how PSG is. Welcome to him. You have to handle the pressure, he’s used to it, he’s a top-level goalkeeper. Lille isn’t easy either, he’s also in the national team. Welcome to him with a trophy, a final, he had to deliver and he did very well.
And the competition behind him?
I’m very happy, I’m here to help and no one is in his place here anyway. You have to be top-level and always give your best, and that’s what I’m going to do.
