On Wednesday at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2–1 in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup. Following the game, UEFA named the Player of the Match.
Désiré Doué (a 21-year-old midfielder/forward) is a worthy winner, having recorded both an assist and a goal. While the choice might come as a slight surprise—given that the first half was a bit of a struggle—few players showed real consistency throughout the match, which is understandable for this stage of the season.
However, one could also have made a case for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (25-year-old forward), Warren Zaïre-Emery (20-year-old midfielder), or Achraf Hakimi (27-year-old right-back). The latter two performed particularly well during the game; Zaïre-Emery, for instance, pulled off a crucial double defensive intervention. Ultimately, though, a goal and an assist always tend to leave a lasting impression.
