Paris Saint-Germain hosted Chelsea on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie and won 5-2. Khvicha Kvaratshkelia, the 25-year-old Parisian striker who scored twice on Wednesday, spoke to PSG TV about the victory.
Kvaratshkelia: “We won because we really wanted to.”
“It was an excellent match from us. We have a three-goal lead over Chelsea going into the second leg. We’re now going to London knowing it will be a difficult match, but we just have to focus and prepare for it. Even if we’re leading 3-2 or 4-2, we always want to score more. I think we won because we really wanted it and we fought until the end.”
Kvaratshkelia: “We still have a long way to go.”
“I’m very happy that we put in such an incredible performance tonight.” It’s a pleasure to score for such incredible fans, so I’m really happy. It’s always a bit difficult coming off the bench, but I just try to do my job and I think I played very well today. However, we still have a long way to go, so I’m focused on the next match.
A magnificent victory for the capital club, who have put themselves in a very strong position to qualify against Chelsea. It was difficult to imagine at halftime that PSG could take the lead as they did. But by showing the form they displayed last season, which allowed them to win the Champions League, the capital club gave their opponents no chance.
Obviously, they will need to confirm this at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday, but by winning by three goals, PSG have almost secured qualification, which looked very difficult given the overall circumstances. Now we need to stay focused and above all repeat this performance against an opponent who has nothing to lose and who will obviously want to give 200% in order to pull off a feat in front of their home crowd.
