Nick Pope, the 33-year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, spoke to the media after the 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes in Matchday 8 of the 2025-2026 Champions League.
Pope: “We couldn’t win, but it was a great performance.”
Another great performance at the Parc, are you proud?
Of course, we came here a few years ago and we know they’re a very high-level team. You only have to look at their Champions League last year and the Club World Cup. They’re a world-renowned team. It’s one of the biggest challenges in football.
Was it a better draw this time?
Yes, possibly. Even though we would have won. But we played very well, we created chances. We couldn’t win, but it was a great performance.
Another penalty saved here?
Yes, that’s right (smiles). I’m very happy to have saved it; it felt good even though we conceded a goal afterwards. We were solid after that. It’s not bad to save the Ballon d’Or winner’s penalty (laughs).
Pope: “It’s still a step in the right direction.”
A real joy for Newcastle to show resilience?
Yes, it’s a very good sign. We wanted an even better result, but it’s still a step in the right direction.
Newcastle qualified for the first time after a great run?
It’s a great performance. We’re very excited. We’re learning lessons along the way, and we’ll see how far we can go.
